An investigation has been launched into the deterioration of newly constructed buildings for a community college in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
The two four-storied buildings in question housed classrooms, laboratories and a dormitory for the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Community College (BVCC).
The local Department of Education and Training (DoET), which had invested about VND13.3 billion (US$800,000) in the project, had handed over the buildings to the college in 2003 and 2005 respectively.
However, the next year after the handing over, the BVCC reported extensive damage to both buildings, including cracks in the walls, pillars and ceilings.
The college also noted that many ceiling fans were out of order and that a leak in the wiring had caused a small explosion.
The BVCC said the drainage system had not been built properly, causing water to stagnate and seep into the structure. The walls of the dormitories had peeled off in many places, and many locks were out of order. The two buildings had cost VND 7.3 billion ($440,000) and VND6 billion ($360,000) respectively. The provincial People’s Committee, which launched the investigation last month, has asked the DoET to work with relevant departments and agencies to carry out quality inspections on the buildings and identify the culprits responsible for all violations.
