Since there have been many foreign companies coordinating in oil and gas exploration, production in the Vietnam continental shell, oil and gas service activities are also more animated. Oil and gas service manpower ashore is getting valuable.

There are many positions got paid US$ 4 – 5,000/month to keep employees.

Presently, there are more than 20 domestic and foreign companies in the field of oil and gas industry. In which, it should be mentioned some famous companies like PetroVietnam Construction, Vietsovpetro Joint Venture, Hoan Vu JOC, Japan Vietnam Petroleum Company, Dai Hung Joint Stock Company, Vina Offshore, Amigos... Each company has from 500 – 3,000 employees.

Most of employees in the field of oil and gas industry have at least one professional degree and some professional certificates.

Previously, domestic universities and colleges had not had special faculties related to oil and gas industries, so majority of technical labourers at oil and gas industry had to recruit foreign employees, especially Malaysian.

Recently, many students from domestic universities and colleges have been trained as per the right profession, with source of good languages, competent enough to replace foreign employees to work oil and gas technical services. Even many companies prefer to recruit Vietnamese employees as they have more advantages of social issues, thus it is easy for them to fall in line with and accommodate themselves to companies. Oil and gas companies are willing to pay US$ 4-5,000/month to “hunt” Vietnamese technical officers.

According to a number of technical officers in oil and gas industry, there are about 20 – 50 highly skilled experienced technical workers with good language qualification, specializing in the type of “surf " work at oil and gas companies.

Most of them are descended from the “cradle” of Vietsovpetro and PTSC and started by oil and gas engineering. In the recent time, many people expressed their worries on “brain drain” in the oil and gas industry as qualified engineers working for domestic companies moved to work for foreign companies.

Mr. Antolievitch Mr Mikhail Sobolev, the first Deputy General Manager of Vietsovpetro, confirmed this is the truth. Since two years ago, Vietsopetro performed the policy of oil production reduction, salary to pay for employees does not increase. While foreign oil and gas production and services companies are in need of manpower, they are willing to pay two or three folds. As a result, leaving from Vietsopetro to foreign companies is unavoidable.

However, Mr. Sobolev affirmed that Vietsovpetro was still proud of itself as the cradle of Vietnam oil and gas industry technical training. In addition, to Vietnamese engineers, he advised them to try their best to contribute to and the most important thing was choosing a suitable and stable position in whatever working environment.
